I bought the same tire/wheel combo for a spare about a week ago. Hopefully we will never need them, but I don't think the slight size difference will be a problem. I was a little surprised to see them use a directional tire for a spare, though. As long as it will get me back to the trailer I'm happy. Thanks for the heads up on the Turnkey mount. I had considered it, but I needed a mount for the passenger side to offset the weight difference between myself and my wife. I just have it strapped in the middle of the bed (the spare, not the wife).:blink:

It would be a lot quieter though. The only good thing about the Commander being so loud is I can't hear her bitching about me running too fast, or bouncing her around, or running through that puddle on her side, etc. I'm trying to get her as muddy as I can so she'll want me to buy doors. If it's her idea it's OK. I'm trying...

 

Haha, glad it's not the wife.. I may end up doing something like that with my spare if they can't make this mount deal right. I have a feeling they aren't going to help me get it squared away, but time will tell.

I was a little surprised by the tire they sent for a spare as well. Like you said, hopefully its okay just to get back to the trailer.

 

First off, anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I believe our rear diff is positive traction. If so, both rear axles are always turning at the same speed. A larger diameter tire on one side will put greater stress on the diff. Tire diameter x pi(3.14) = circumference. With that said, if you had a rear flat, maybe you could put your front tire on back, and the oversize spare on front(2wd) if you had a great distance to go.

 

Seems like what I've learned too.

 

One tire a bit bigger on the back will make the sxs pull to one side a bit .
I would pump the smaller tire up with more air pressure and let some out of the taller one untill I couldn't feel it pull anymore .
The rear diff is made like a spool on the inside . You won't hurt it but a big difference in tire size would be hard on the rear axle CV joints .

I had lost quite a bit of air in one of my rear tires. One was at 20 and the other at 9 PSI. exactly what Troy said, it pulled to one side pretty bad. So that can't be good for the drive train.

Actually if tire is smaller or bigger your better off putting it on rear. The rear is a spool front is the visco. If you put two different sizes on front the visco will try to and probably engage do to the increases speed of smaller tire. Even when not in 4wd.

 

Anybody wanna buy a spare?

 

Any time you buy a spare it really needs to be the same brand and same wheel width . No two 27" tires from one brand to the next are the same rolling circumstance.

 

But we are talking about a spare. Not something you are putting on and leaving it there. If it's loose dirt sand or mud there is not much to worry about. Asphalt and concrete is really the only place there will be a real concern . So take it slow and easy till you get the right tire back on.

 

just by new tyres that match man I no the econemny sucks lately but you owe it to yourself sometime to just buy tyres for your comander

 

It's a 3 month old Commander. I don't need tires.

 

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Good to know about the front diff, my dad and I had talked about doing what Troy mentioned and keeping it in 2wd if possible. I guess that isn't the best route either.

May just have to pump one up and air down the spare to make it work as best as possible in that situation.

 

It's easy to tell if your unit is pulling to one side . If it seems to drive straight your all set and can get back to the camp or trucks .
If you ever get in a bind and the only spare is a way different size use it on the back and stay on loose ground . No pavement , grass or gravel and go slow
