OK so I know better, however, I made the ultimate rookie mistake. I have ridden the Oregon dunes for over 20 years and always ridden quads.. This is the first year i have owned a side by side and knew there were belt issues. Do i bring an extra belt and tools... NOPE i am apparently the same person I always warn people about.

So in the middle ( and i mean deep) of the dunes... broke a belt. No tools, no extra belt, nothing. I was fortunate andd go towed back by a razr 1000.

So now that I know how to change this belt (which is a total pain in the ASS) I have to believe that some smart person out there (because can am apparently has not clue) has a good modification to make it easier to change the drive belt.

SOOOO here are my questions:

1) is there an mod for the belt cover. In other words is there anything that makes it easier to get to that bottom bolt that is behind the exhaust. I am thinking about making a larger hole in the bottom skid plate. Just sucks you have to get under the damn thing to get to it.

2) Are there any modificaions (like quick releases, differnt covers etc) for the body plastic that is under the seat and on the side by the engine. Seems like making that one peace with quick releases would be nice.. I searched but coild not find anything.

3) I am sure i know the answer, however, does aftermarket exhauts make it easier to get to the belt case cover?

4) What is the best belt out there?? I am going to buy a very cheap SPARE belt for emergencies and pay the good money for a belt that will last.

Thanks for any help... I searched the forum for any answers but did not find anything that matched what I am asking. May have missed it so sorry if all this was asked and answered in a previous thread.

Nope nope nope get a maverick belt.
The cover is what is. 8mm ratchet wrench. I personally wouldn't make the holes bigger but I'm in loose rock not the dunes. You may get away with it there. As for exhaust they all run the pipe down the same place or use the existing pipe. Sorry good luck. Keep a spare belt but I have buddies thar bought the cheap belts for that emergency and it didn't pay for its self.

Hmmmm can not see how it would not pay for itself... gets you back on the trail and lasts until you get a good new belt... i would rather keep the spare belt as a cheap belt because I would rather buy a new fresh belt when the old one breaks and keep the cheap like a spare tire... I would hate to throw a $100 belt in the storage compartment and have it go bad or become brittle.

Hope that makes sense on how i explained it.

You said the box is what it is?? no one has done any mods for this horrible set up? That is soo hard to believe.

Just buy two maverick or gates belts, then when one goes bad replace it, instead of buying one good nd one cheap, then if u break, one u gotta replace twice. You should probably change it anyway every 1500 miles anyway

I find it faster and easier in the end to remove all of the bolts but the RR back corner bolt on the skid plate / cover below the CVT cover, just loosen that bolt and swing skid back out of the way, by leaving in one bolt it is easy to re align and a snap with a 10mm socket and ratchet.
You will still need a good 8mm ratchet box wrench but with the skid plate out of the way the stroke will be a lot longer.

Where do you guys purchase your belts from?

Gates or Maverick belts better?

Thanks in advance

My thought reading this is if I broke or torched the OEM expensive original somewherein the middle of no where, my thought would be I would want as good or better thinking it would get me back, cheaper does not fit that purpose in my mind.

Perhaps keep an eye on the CVT intake, is it plugging with loose sand, read up on the clutch lock up with Troy and Bollax and draw your own conclusion, your gonna want to do a full service now that you smoked it and glazed things up or your headed down the road of Negligent Repetition quite likely.

Ahhhh the fun . . . . .

I am not clear on why the exhaust had to come off for you, that is not something others had to do to change a belt, in clouding myself?

X2 so what there is now another joint in the exhaust pipe? Looks pretty close to the plastic panel
