New to the forum. The Defender XMR is The reason I joined. Saw one at my favorite dealer and I’m trying to justify buying one to myself and my wife. I’m trying to calculate whether the added features make it a better deal than buying an XT / HD10 and adding tires (love my regular bighorns but the 2.0s I’ve known about are junk if you’re riding in brush and rocks), arms for more clearance, etc. I’m just starting my research and would appreciate you well informed folks weighing in. Thank You

Thank You. I didn’t know the 4wd was any different. Also don’t know what they mean by "full skid plate". Is it flimsy 1/8” or a real one? I’ve not had much luck finding out specs. The info on their site is limited. Guess I’ll have to go back and look but it’s 200 miles away.

Just guessing but the skid is probably the same 1/4” hdpe plastic that they use on the commander. One of these days I’m going to upgrade to uhmh plastic, which is much better and I’ll go with 3/8, maybe 1/2.

As to the locker, the xmr defender, along with the Rock climbing edition x3 and the xmr x3 were the first can ams to get the new locker. All other 4wd can ams have the visco locker, which is 3wd until one of the front wheels spins a few times which automatically locks in the other front wheel - sometimes that’s just to late. There are aftermarket options though.

I really like the xmr defender. The price is $1100 more than the xt, which would be a no brainer for me. There maybe some incentives on the xt not available on the xmr though, plus there are last years models of xt’s around. Still, If you’re like me, you would regret not getting the xmr down the road.

You’re a wealth of knowledge, thanks. I guess it’s a no brainer. I’ve had the 1/2” Trail Armor full skid on my Ranger for years and it’s bullet proof. Absolute necessity. Do you know what those twin tube shocks are on the XMR and how they compare w the Fox? The other issue I see is those fender flares getting tore off in the brush unless there’s a wraparound bumper that sticks out as far as they do.

I’m not sure what shocks they’re using. The fender flares on the commander are well attached and stay on. The boy did manage to break one of mine several weeks back. The section he broke was only like $25, so they’re probably not over priced. I would expect the defenders to be similar.

I happened to be driving by a dealer yesterday. I was in a big hurry and only had a couple of minutes. They had a yellow xmr (already sold). It’s a really nice looking machine.

It has a bit of seat bolstering unlike the non xmr versions on the lot. I sat in it - very comfy for a work machine. I was in such a hurry I forgot to look at the shocks. And after I left I started wondering if it had an unlocking (turf mode) rear diff like the others. As it comes from the factory, it doesn’t have a roof. But it has a nice winch, front bumper, mud flares, rock guards, nice tires and the new front diff.

I stopped by another dealer and, even though they didn’t have any defenders on the floor, they had sold a bunch, including XMRs last summer. He was honest enough to say the XMR shocks were only "ok" and not nearly as good as FOX. He also said of the XMRs they sold last summer he had had none back for repair. But then again he said he knew of no Tranny/Shifter problems with the '16s they had sold so I suppose you have to take it w a grain of salt.

That dealer also wasn’t sure if any hard cab back and or window would fit with those snorkels. I emailed that question to customer support. I’d almost rather get the lexan window and cut it around the snorkels than deal with the soft back flapping around. The ones I’ve been around on other SxSs don’t hold up well.

I installed the Can am "camo soft rear panel". The snorkels don't intrude but I had to drill out their 4 rivets at the bottom of the window frame to fit the window. Once installed I used stainless bolts to replace the drilled out rivets. The panel is a very snug fit and doesn't flap at all with half doors and full windshield.
