So Arly, now that you have run it a bit, you liking it better than the rhino? Do you feel it will handle your grooming better or is it just a new machine with the same pulling power limited by what can be applied to the ground? though I hope that's not the case!

Brian, We normally operate in snow, so until we get the intake modified and functional, we'll not be doing much with it. What little we have had her out, its power is a whole category higher than the 45hp Rhino we retired. But then, this is what we were looking for in its replacement anyway. When we do get out in some real snow, we'll be posting photos and a report.

updates, intake moved

Today the shop rerouted the CVT intake into the cab. I'll get a photo posted of there handy work ASAP. As soon as we can fulfill 10 hours of break-in time, we'll start working her seriously. We received 27" of snow over the weekend and sure wish we could have used her then. Here are a few photos taken while doing light duty.

The one is tightening the rear pods track tension for the third time...... Could they be stretching that much???

:icon_wink:Carry lots of spare gas with you , it will be working!

air is back

OK, we got the Defender back from the shop and put her right to work. First two photos show the line they added connecting it to the cab.

I took the sled trail back from there shop and stopped for coffee and treats on the way. :) The trail is in the background, just behind the suburban.

Then I stopped at a school to pack there trails. In the last photo you can see the belly pan was rubbing.

Defender seriously used today.

We lost our ATV yesterday due to pod idler grief, so the Defender wiring schedule was moved forward so she could be put into the field as a replacement. Most of our implements require power as the one seen here so a connection at the hitch, needed to be added. Thought someone might like to see photos taken today. Some of these photos were taken live by my cohort.

I should add that the "hot belt" warning had come on before the CVT intake modification was done. No warnings were flashing today and she was towing much, much harder.

Thanks for all the great pics and info. You made my decision easy to buy one in the spring! Are your groomer or packers home made? Do you have any other pics of them they look pretty cool. The one looks like its made of plastic culvert pipe?

Thanks,

what implements

Hi Greg, We groom XC trails and the implements we use are purchased, some modified and some built from the ground up. We have and use 5 different ones. I'm not sure I care to derail this thread into that. But more info can be had at;

" Grooming Talk"

Feel free to private message me as well. Hope that helps!

We decided that the Defender can not pull quite as much as the Rhino, since any of the pods can spin on there own. Seems that the Rhino has differentials that are limited slip?? We did lock the rear axle when needed, which made an improvement. Not a plus but it has sooooo much more power in reserve. This is not a deal breaker in our book...

While in use on Saturday, the transmission made a terrible grinding noise. We called the dealer who thought its shift lever may be maladjusted. Its scheduled to go back to check that ASAP.

Attached is a photo of the battery area that's below the seat taken while adding wiring harness. This machine has been much more easy to work on for adding that and switches for implement controls. I should add, that the motor being moved back and partially under the cab and box, is much more accessible for servicing as well.

Thanks for keeping us updated :)

Pics from the field.

Here is a few photos taken while working today. We are normally towing an implement but I hard to pack one trail which was a tad deep, so I jettisoned the roller for it. Otherwise we are be towing something. In the rear view of the machine, in the box is a shovel and 5 gallon fuel can.

Hope you like them.

Our defender has developed some grief. The exhaust heat shield that's above the engine fell apart. This shield in important, but not a show stopper. Our dealership came out to look at that and while listening to the motor, it developed a terrible knock. Sounded like a rod was loose. They checked everything they could while in our shop and could not find anything amiss. Only oddity found was oil in the air intake..... Gee, I have liked the beast so far.

heat shield theory

Well I'm not sure but I could guess. To much heat, to much vibration, made with overly thin material, snow being thrown on it?? I'm not much of a thermal engineer.... At the center of this photo is the failed shield. On the opposite side seen here, a % had fallen off.

How did it fall apart? Hope they get some of these bugs worked out, but I don't think I will work it as hard as you need to. All that snow has to be hard on a bike

Our dealer inspected our dear lame Defender and replaced its engine oil, filter and found nothing usual. They checked the valve clearances which was found to be within specs. They then inspected the exhaust system and found that the seal just under the broken heat shield had blown. I'm not sure what seal this might be but they now think the knock noise was coming from this failed exhaust seal. They ordered its entire exhaust system assuming BRP will allow them to replace it all. They also thought the heat buildup for the blown seal was vaporizing the oil in a line and that was leaking on top of engine. They sent all this information to Ca-am and have ordered a entire exhaust system. We are now waiting for a respond from BRP.

Heat shielding improvements?

It was a header seal that had originally failed. BRP might come up with a "new and improved heat shielding" for us to test. Seems its exhaust heat shielding could be improved on, at least for winter operations like we do.

Is anyone interested in this thread or testing????
