Gearbox ball bearing replacement question

305 Views 16 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MountainRoamer
Hey all, I think I need to replace this bearing (number 5 in the attached image). Im getting some leaking behind the belt housing and have already replaced numbers 8 and 9 after a belt blowout caused the belt to explode and it tore up the helix and everything. Question is, can I do this without taking the whole cover off of the gearbox?

Thanks in advance!

I've replaced the seals you replaced a couple of times. The lips of the oil seal and o-ring need to be super wet with gear oil per the instructions when installed, I've also used super lube when installing. The oil seal also needs to go straight so the lips don't deform or it may continue to leak. I've got a pic of a little tool I made on this forum somewhere. I've also done it without the tool.

I've also replaced that bearing. I don't recall it being a sealed bearing on one side. I think oil will flow throw it and the oil seals you replaced are all that stops the leaking. But like ace said, you do have to take the side cover off. I'm not sure how easy it is to get off on the max. On the two seater, you have to get the engine/gearbox up a little to get the cover off.
Thanks Acefire! Pretty simple to do? Or will I need to remove a bunch of other parts? I'm already removing the clutches, cover, etc. But can't remember what it looks like back there and I'm at work right now haha.

Also, the back cover does have a little damage behind the helix, should it be replaced? Seemed minor to me when this broke so I didn't replace it but maybe I should have. (Attached) this was when I first replaced all the parts.

I'm upgrading my clutch and doing services to get ready for the season so I had to pull it apart and then found that leak :/

Thanks Slowindown. I'll take a peek tonight and good tip on the oil!
Post 7 in this thread has my little oil seal tool and part list for it.

Do you remember which post it was where we walked you through getting that cover off? My thumb is tired and that was a long thread . Lol

Actually it’s not horrible. But you do have to remove motor mount bolts and the rear gearbox mount bolt. Slide motor forward then pick gearbox mount up out of the cradle . Then cover will come off.

I’ll find that thread and post back. I remember taking a bunch of stuff apart but not as much as when I replaced the gearbox. Also his is a max. Maybe easier.
It could be I’ve never had the covers of a max .

Well, I got the back of the belt housing off and I don't think it is that bearing. I think it is the valve cover gasket or the chain tensioner housing. Any tips to find the likelier culprit? I'm leaning towards the gasket... that looks pretty straightforward to replace but any tips? Thanks guys!

The gaskets are easy. The get old, hard and compressed. I've not changed the chain tensioner seals but mine has been leaking too and I need to - it looks straightforward. In any event, I don't see how either of those could get oil inside of your cvt housing.
Only way oil is getting in the box is from the out out shaft on engine or the input seal on gearbox.

Valve cover is damp but not leaking enough to do anything other than collect dust. Looks like the biggest leak is the chain tensioner cap.

Well unfortunately I took those pics after spraying a bunch of degreaser on. :/

I think it got inside because of the damage on the back side of the belt housing from the initial incident. Even though I tried to clean up the edges and stuff, it got ripped up and melted so it doesn't have a factory tight seal. Attached is the backside of it.

Thanks again. May just replace the back of the housing, the seals, and that tensioner cap!
