Engine Braking

I'm still learning my Commander and don't have anyone I know that has one, so I'm asking this here...... Is it normal that when you let off the gas you really don't need to use the brakes to stop? That the engine is enough to stop you? At least for a "planned" stop.

For the most part that is correct. Of course there are a lot of factors that will come in to play as well, such as speed and planned stopping distance, degree of incline, etc.

The Commander has excellent engine braking and can crawl down a steep hill without the use of brake at all, and it will come to a complete stop on flat land without use of the brakes.

In low mine will actually stop on a long fairly steep hill if I don't feather the gas. Some like it others hate it. Usually the ones that don't have it wish they did.

Glad to hear all the responses. I'm fine with it, just wanted to make sure it wasn't an "issue" of something wrong! I did have an issue with the rear brake. Was up for a guys weekend with 4 other UTV's and my brakes went out. With the engine braking it wasn't a big deal, so I just waited till I got home to check it out. The rear caliper must have locked up and then got so hot it actually melted part of the casting and bent open. Had to replace the complete caliper. So you can see why I'm asking the question...... :)
