Pretty normal the more miles you put on it the louder the ticking gets. Their are wear buttons that wear down and increase the clearances between the outer sheave and the governor cup.

 

What are the conditions when you're hearing the noise?

My initial guess would be that you're hearing the primary clutch. Either your clutch buttons (slider shoes) or weights, which could be sliding on the bolts that hold them or something like that. If you pull the cvt cover off, you'll get a better idea. Worn buttons make it look a little wobbly.

What sort of use has the bike had and how many miles?

 

These are the buttons. They're about $55 from the dealership or $32 on eBay

 

If your only hearing the tick at the intake I don't know that it's worth the 32$ and the labor to fix it just yet. It will tick out the intake with new buttons. If you can't hear it sitting in the seat then they are fairly worn.

 

Throwing this out there also as Troy has mentioned those sliders do wear a bit of the clutch material away after time and my new buttons @ 3000 miles didn't really tighten things up so I stamped out some shims to put behind them that are now up to .030 thou thick in fact I would have added another .010 last time but didn't have any more so it's gonna rattle for awhile longer lol Fact on the BRP sled primary's they have a spring on 1 side that keeps them snug for just about forever, not sure why they didn't use that design in these!

 

Thanks for the quick replies!! Only hear it at an idle with no helmet on standing right beside the intake. It's got 120 hours on it, can't remember the mileage? From the sounds of it- normal. Thanks again
