Yes, very easy to do with very basic tools. Remove the seat and plastic side covers to access your belt cover. I have also found it easier to drop the bottom skid plate on mine to access the bottom bolts on the belt cover but have also removed it leaving it on. From what I recall takes an 8mm socket to remove outer cover bolts. What you WILL need that you likely don’t have is the clutch spreader tool that threads into the large clutch plate allowing belt to be easily removed and new one installed. Costs about $35.00 from BRP without it don’t even bother it’s absolutely needed.

 

8x1. 25 mm bolt , 70+ mm long. You can get it at you local hardware store.. make sure the full shank is threaded.

 

I have a defender 1000 ...looks like it's in rear not under seats like a Maverick or a commander would be...

 

Mine came with a tool to open the pulley, check under the hood in back of the tool kit, it threads onto the pulley and then you insert the bolt and the bolt pushes the pulley apart.

 

Mine came with tool kit part# 704 700 171....it doesn't have anything out of the ordinary for clutch opening. I looked under hood ...do you have a part #? ....also mine is a xmr if that makes a difference

 

Try part numbers 708200686 and 529036352 they are real pricey so I would try the hardware store bolt first and save yourself some money.

Just remember that the drive belt is directional. When installed correctly, the 2 arrows on top of the belt should be pointing to the left (front of the machine) as the belt rotation is counter clockwise.
Page 92 to 94 of your XMR owners manual describes the whole procedure in detail.

 

The arrow is for reference. It’s not directional. Doesn’t matter what direction you put it in the first time new. But if removed it needs installed the second time in the same direction it was removed. I have seen belt from the factory with Arrow pointed clockwise and counter clockwise.

 

Sorry ace fire, that is incorrect, as stated above the arrow is supposed to point to the front of the machine when the belt is installed properly. Same way with sleds too.

 

What belt does everyone recommend? Haven't had any problems but trying to be ahead of the game.

 

I guess you believe all tires are directional . That belt from day one has no clue what direction it’s rotating.

 

Not all belts point forward some point left to right but still have a arrows on the belt. Am I to believe that if I would install my belt the correct direction that I would get 5000 miles on it instead of 3500??
