Don't know what the rest of it looks like or the guy that's selling it but I would be taking a good look,

Something has to be bent in the linkage. Or the gearbox has a broken part. With only 1800 miles I doubt the gearbox is the problem. Has to be in the linkage.

There is no linkage . There is a cable from shifter to gearbox

Will it not go into gear with the motor shut off or just when it is running. If it will go into gear with the motor shut off then you have a clutch problem, if it will not go into gear with the motor running then it sounds like you have a gear set that may be out of time or a bent shifter fork. Have you rocked it while trying to shift it. And can you get it in neutral?

Drain the gear box oil and flush to see what comes out. Refill. Then get a search on the forum and look up linkage adjustment and just maybe you have a solution, otherwise as said by Troy earlier, new gear box.

FYI. I talked to Mr RPM. A few months ago when I needed a new GB. The gear boxes he has for 850 are gen 1 gear boxes and wont fit Commanders.
As for the grinding I would check the primary clutch. Before writing off the gear box. The one way bearings could be froze up. Or some other issue like dirty sheaves causing the clutch to not fully disengage.

Drain the oil and see what comes out, report back and we can go from there, is there any oil in it?

That is good to know Troy. Thanks for getting that out there. Back when I had my GB troubles I emailed him and all he had in stock were gen 1s . But I am glad it worked out the way it did for me. I really like the lower ratio Mav GB I got.

To the OP: When I first got my Commander it ground and was hard to get into gear. I serviced the clutch and packed the one way bearings and it was fine after that.........Well till I lost a bearing and blew the gear box Thats is another story :)
But they lived happily everafter.

Only 4 oz? I think the gearbox takes bout 450ml when changing oil which is bout 15.2 oz per 2013 shop manual. Looks like you were bout empty and if so no doubt some damage was done if ridden very long. Myabe you caught it in time being no shavings came out.

I suspected possible low oil, I think there will be some metal in there laying somewhere. Takes oil up to the filler hole for me. Something is not right and where did the oil go from the start that is gone?

I would get it out and order a new gear box if it were me?

Yup it's a job, but there are a couple of threads that could help you, do a search if you feel it's within your reach, may want a friend and a few beer around, it's a six pack each for sure.
