Thats what I was going to do as well, I was going to do the insulation first. Then see how warm it was, not a fan of wrap on the pipes, I have always heard it make them rust alot more!

Yeah the wrap may not be so good for you in Ohio. They do cause the pipes to rust quicker. However, in AZ with low humidity I don't have to worry about it. I just have to make sure I let the pipes get hot and dry them out after I wash it. With that header pipe right under the engine cover; wrapping that alone should cut the heat way down. The insulation may be enough though. If that works by itself then I won't worry about doing the full pipes. I will still do the section of pipe that runs by the CVT cover. In the pic below you can see that they used heat tape to cover it. Wrapping the section will prevent heat soak of the CVT and will keep the heat out of there.

One question... what about when heat cools it causes condesation (water) and condesation sits there stuck in the wraps till it air dries and rusts things out??

If you mean after a wash, the pipes get so hot the wrap is dry in a couple of minutes. If you mean in general, you would be right. I just have the unique circumstance of living in south west Arizona where it is very dry and you don't have to worry about that. You can coat the pipes before you wrap them which cuts the rust way down. You can also have them sent out to get them coated with ceramic which works great. I had my pipes wrapped on my Outlander and never had any rust issues. The wrap got the heat off my left leg which would get real hot. The other thing about wrap is that if you coat them with a good hi-temp silicone coating it will keep them from absorbing water. Most of that stuff is designed for exhaust wraps and withstands 1500 degrees which is more than enough for the Commander. For me, even if they did end up rusting, it would be better than the heat issue driving around in Arizona. I would replace the pipes once a year if it could guarantee to get rid of the heat. The last thing I want is more heat when it's already 110 degrees outside. I know replacement pipes on my Outlander were around a 100 bucks.

I have an 06 outty and put together a running group discount for getting the pipes ceramic coated on one of our sister forums way back in 06 that I believe is still running. I've asked over there if anyone ever unwraps them to see if there is any rust and no one has so I have always been curious

Does anyone know how much it should cost to have the header pipes ceramic coated? Should I ceramic coat all of it all the way back to the muffler or just the headers? And who does this kind of work a muffler shop?
